As promised on my Facebook over a month and five or six posts ago, I have finally finished my accursed laundry room!
Mostly.
Honestly it is 99% finished with some missing finishing touches that I haven't quite settled on yet.
This project had a lot of bumps in the road, with falling shelves, excitable expanding foam, and of course, lots of fights over iPod playlists.
So without further ado, breath abated, I give you, the laundry room makeover!
As you can see, we had a lot of issues.
The laundry room had kind of become a catch-all for cleaning and paper products, light bulbs, and of course, laundry. Husband and I could never agree how to go about making the space work, ergo the constant shuffle of this mess between the tops of the machines and the floors.
This room is at the end of our long, dark hallway next to the garage, so I like leaving the door and window open for light, and easier access. Husband likes his privacy, so we beefed about this a lot.
It was only primered white, and I had slapped those curtains on when I moved in as a temporary replacement of the insulator board Bachelor Husband had put up there for privacy.
I spent a lot of time when I first moved in undo-ing Bachelor Husband's jerry-rigging ways, as you'll find out in future renovation posts, but not today!
Started off by removing the door (which I love being gone!), getting everything cleared out and stacked neatly away in my office, which you'll get to see next post has become the new catch-all area. Dryer sheets were there for the last load of laundry finishing so the room would be empty-empty.
I also learned how the panoramic function on my phone works!
I wish I had photographed the clusterfuck jerry rigging used on this shelf to keep it up.
Seriously.
Whoever put this shelf up must not have known how earthquakes work, because this thing popped off the wall with a solid sneeze after I removed ONE NAIL. Literally, I had my hands on the shelf piece and sneezed, barely wiggling it, and it popped off the wall.
I spend a lot of time cursing the name of whoever ruined things in this house before Husband got his hands on it. I like to place blame where it's due, and I like to think this heinous person's ears burn every time I have to fix one of their idiot mistakes.
My paint scared me with it's swamp-like appearance after it settled.
It really did look brown after I mixed it. I was scared and angry that the paint guy had messed up. As expected, it worked out to be an incredibly gorgeous drab green color that I want to marry and make other green colors with.
Once the room was finished painting, I started to work on our new storage.
I sanded, mounted brackets, and repainted the jerry rig shelf to try and re-use it in the room again.
I also purchased a cubical white shelf to add storage and prettiness.
As you can see from the spackle-patching, it took two tries to set the brackets where I needed to fit and support properly. I know, shocker, I'm not perfect.
As it is, we got the shelves up and put some stuff on them to weight test. We thought we nailed it, and figured we'd give it a day to see if we like it. We were already unsure about the old shelf re-use. Frankly, I was disappoint at how not awesome it came out.
Once we heard the rip and crash, we confirmed we didn't like that shelf.
So I ripped it all out, and went back to the store for some inspiration and another cube shelf since husband liked the first one once we got it mounted. A lot of what happened after that went undocumented, since I just plowed away at the room with new inspiration.
I picked up an ironing board mount, a new valance, and a "paper" curtain - for privacy and light at the same time to hopefully keep husband happy about keeping the door off. At this point, every time he walked past the room to work in the garage he would stop, look it over, and whisper, "Dayum."
He says he loves it now, and it looks like I added a brand new room to the house that didn't exist before.
I just picked up an accordion drying rack and am still deciding where to install that bad boy.
The ironing board got a new cover of purple glory, and I grabbed some matching striped curtains that I think might get hung from the ceiling to cover the shelves when not in use since the door probably won't be there until we move and we have to put it back.
Also thinking of working these into the room too, cause they're so darn cute!
I have a lot of things straightened out now, so hopefully I can get a more consistent posting schedule.
Thanks for your patience readers, and not rioting outside my house for not posting last week.
Awesome work!
