I'd like start by saying, out of all the episodes featuring babies, this one has been the most excruciating to watch. I am not a mother, but only a sister/aunt, so I can only imagine the suffering of you mommas trying to get through all the pained baby screams in this episode. On top of that pain is the knowledge, or more my opinion, that this is another emergency situation that was very much avoidable. I know there are social safety nets, especially for families with children. I find it really hard to believe there weren't any programs available to bridge their income gap.
There's so many issues on deck in this episode, but it seems they mostly focus on the drugs. Drugs are bad! At least that's what this story is trying to say. I'm not sure how far I want to get into this issue, as it's a pretty emotional one for a lot of people.
From what I've gathered, drug use is generally caused by poverty and/or mental illness and a need to escape. Obviously we can't fix poverty overnight, but many of the crimes and related issues of the drug world would be averted if drugs were legalized and regulated. Just imagine how much that revenue would bolster the economy, while keeping users protected from dirty product. Taxing these products in order to fund rehabs and mental health facilities would also clear a lot of the other issues with drug use. Is it a perfect plan? Of course not. We can see with alcohol and cigarettes that there will always be those that abuse, misuse, or let these products ruin their lives, however; the resources are there to help as a preference to punishment.
With all that in mind, how are people still so ignorant about drug production? You would think if the parents had the resources to figure out how to cook and deal meth discreetly, they would have learned that you don't shit where you eat. The chemical components used in meth, as Alex points out, leech into everything. It's surprising that the parents weren't suffering more from exposure, but then they probably don't put everything within reach into their mouths. Such logic, many neglect.
