One of My Mom's More Awesome Moments

I had done some recon today, and by recon I mean breaking into my parents' house and flipping through all the albums I could find to get a photo of one of my favorite childhood Halloween costumes.
Sadly, I failed.

So instead of adorable photos of my younger, chubbier self, you'll have to settle for descriptions.
For many years in my youth, I was in love with Disney movies, and one Halloween I wanted nothing more than to be Esmeralda from Hunchback of Notre Dame.

The best part is, my mom was a pretty talented seamstress, and accepted every Halloween as a challenge. She did an epic job with this one, and made me a child appropriate, pink rendition of that outfit. It had the white, off the shoulder top with a pink satin ruffle across the top shoulders, a long purple skirt, and  matching pink satin shawl and sarong with coins sewn to the hems.
I was the most gypsy looking 7 year old in my neighborhood.
I even got to wear awesome makeup, which till that point was off-limits.
As a loud-mouthed, talkative kid, it was also awesome because all the parents wanted to know where I got it. They'd ask who I was, and where I bought it, to which I'd reply, "I'm a pink Esmeralda, and my mom made this by herself!"

I loved that costume so much, I'm pretty sure I wore it 3 years in a row, and then after it didn't fit, started pressuring my sisters to wear it. I think all four of them have worn it at least once, which is a pretty sweet legacy if I do say so myself.

  1. I had a sister who made kick-ass costumes for her kids. (She was 20 years older than me, so my nieces and nephews were about the same age as me.) Everyone once in a while I'd get to wear one of those costumes when one of her FIVE kids didn't want to.) My favorite was an elaborate, sparkly, BLACK "senorita" outfit, complete with a comb & veil head-dress and a big lace fan. It was gorgeous.

If I was left to my own devices, though, I was a vampire or a witch. Period.
