It is absolutely never fucking acceptable to lie to kids. They always find out the truth eventually, and the fact that someone in a trusted position lied to them just makes accepting that truth even worse.
I can only condone lies of omission (half truths) in situations in which the truth is not something children should be told. One of my younger sisters asked Husband and I what a Honeymoon was when we were getting married. We made a judgement call that she was too young to handle, "So they can have unabated sex," and went with, "It's a special time for newlyweds to be alone and mushy together in private so they don't gross everyone out with their snuggles and smooching."
In my mind, it's still the truth, just watered down a little for child-appropriate conversation.
