In a practical sense, it takes a ridiculous amount of time and effort to both concoct and carry out a cover up, as well as some collaboration. That's a lot of trust and circumstances to effectively be distrustful.
Don't get me wrong, I've had my share of covers, primarily as a teen, when I went out of my way to make sure my mom never knew what I was actually doing, ever. I could have been at Jim's* house studying, and I would tell her I was really at the park drawing. Why? Well, lots of reasons that currently are being explored as an adult, but once I've sorted that out I'll be sure to share.

The cover up, if not worse than the crime, is at least equal to or worsens the whole situation. Not only did the perpetrator know what they did was wrong, but they went even further with the wrong by trying to hide it. Put on your big kid pants and own up to your mistake!
