Not Tabloid Worthy

F.H. Bradley said, "There are persons who, when they cease to shock us, cease to interest us."

I think we can all agree that certain people in the spotlight would cease to be there if they stopped being shocking. It's all they have going for them, and eventually those type of "entertainers" run out of ways to be surprising. There is always a plateau.

I don't believe that we as a society need scandal, but we do get a thrill from it. That's why soap operas and dramas maintain a stronghold on television rosters.

In many ways, it would be impossible to go through life without having a naturally occurring surprise once in a while. Even when it strikes in reality, shock is not always unwelcome.

Look at baby announcements. It's almost always a surprise to most people, and there's that handful who always suspected and feel validated for having guessed at it.

Proposals, even if they've been discussed before, can sometimes come as a surprise to one party. I know Husband and I were dead set on getting married before we made an official engagement, but he still managed to amaze me when he put a ring on it.

I suppose when it comes to shock, it has to be balanced. It can't be all the time, and it only really resonates if there's significant meaning behind it. We're talking about you Miley!
