Spoiler Sunday: Fallen

The next few Sundays will venture into some fictional theology
with Lauren Kate's Fallen Series.

    • Grade 8 Up—Luce must spend her senior year at reform school after her boyfriend dies in a mysterious fire. She suspects that the dark shadows that have tormented her all her life had something to do with it. When she meets supernaturally gorgeous Daniel, she feels a familiar longing, making her believe they have met before. Although Cam is clearly interested in her, Luce only wants Daniel, who runs both hot and cold. He tries to keep Luce at a distance, telling her that the truth would kill her as it has many times before. The first chapter is gripping and foreshadows the supernatural elements to come. The plot revolves around lovers who find one another, only to lose one another over and over again in a story that spans centuries. Instead of vampires, though, these are fallen angels. Many elements are not resolved, such as the cause of the fire and why angels are at this school. Still, fans of supernatural romance will be lining up for this book despite its flaws, and begging for a sequel.—Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH

I have a guilty confession to make, I love young adult books,
the more cliched and "cheap" the better.
It's like McDonald's for my brain, and I can't get enough!

If you were looking for depth, thorough plot development, or mind-blowing
story-telling, this book is not for you. Just close the browser and walk away,
or stick around to laugh at my coverage of the story.

If however, you love cliched romance, theological fiction,
and being forever pissed off at the protagonists (think Twilight),
then you will love this story!

In the first of 4 (technically 5) books in this series,
we open with Luce, an almost independent teenager who just can't catch a break.
She is constantly in trouble, linked to serious mischief,
and even manslaughter, which lands her in Sword & Cross boarding school,
conveniently located in ridiculously pretty Savannah, Georgia,
which has almost nothing to do with the story at all.

Nothing to see here, move along
She meets a lot of cool people, including two really, really,
ridiculously good looking, swaggerific guys who just can't resist her.
(Does this recipe sound familiar yet?)

Things happen that are strange and curious,
and Luce of course befriends the outcast, book-smart nerd of the bunch,
who happens to be a good kid who only attends Sword & Cross
because of her family's connection to the school.

More weird shit happens, and eventually Luce catches on that she is, in fact,
the protagonist of this super special saga, since she discovers
that everyone, I mean everyone, is after her life, either to destroy or protect it.

This of course, includes Hunk #1 and Hunk #2, along with some other colorful ladies,
who all turn out to be "fallen angels," looking out for God and Luce's best interests.

What's a fallen angel, you say?
They're the poor bastards who were cast out of heaven and hell for thinking too long
when God and Satan had that throwdown schism of celestial cattiness.

Some of them are more demon, while some are more seraphim,
all dependent on which end of the netherworld they associate with more.

Of course, Hunk #1 is more angelic, and #2 more demonic.
The tension! Oh God! So dreamy, so forbidden!

Aw yissss
Things come to a climax when the librarian inevitably kidnaps Luce,
and shows her true colors as a familiar to Satan,
and tries to kill Luce to settle the "balance" of souls between heaven and hell.

Angels come to the rescue, shit hits the fan, Luce lives,
and everyone takes off from Sword & Cross without anyone giving two shakes
that half a dozen kids just up and disappeared.
It's only a reform boarding school, no big deal.

Tune in next week for the second installment in this series: Torment.
